It's the same for me. First malternative to whisky.

I'm no snob, and would give Johnny Walker credit where credit is due if it were at least a good dram for the price - but as it turns out I can't even say that much about it. In my home state in the USA, you could instead get Teacher's (with a rich peaty note), Dewar's 8 Year Old Mezcal Finish (age-stated), Cutty Sark Prohibition Edition (bottled at integrity strength), or Loch Lomond Original (a single-malt) for the same price or less - and with Johnny Walker, which offers none of those benefits, barely being any better in my opinion than the bottom-of-bottom-shelf blends that start at under $20 for a 1.75L jug, the choice is a no-brainer. It seems that Diageo is perfectly content to just coast on past reputations instead of upping the quality of JW Red to at least punch within its weight class - I think Jim Beam and Dewar's White Label are the best of the MASSIVE global alcohol brands in that respect, with the latter having a nice dry, earthy character with hints of dark fruits and little of the simple syrup-like grain whisky sweetness that is often found in cheap blended scotch.

Hi Ralfy, with all the weather modifications going across the Uk in the past few years, do you think the overall quality of whisky will deteriorate. Especially with the added metals being sprayed in our skies?

Glad to see you're still making videos! Over 10 years ago when I first found your channel, you were singularly responsible for me going out to local liquor stores to look for some of the whiskeys you were tasting. That's when I found my first bottle of Glenfiddich 18. I enjoyed that bottle for the next few years.

I totally agree with Ralfy on his opinion about Teacher's blended Scotch. Before tasting it, I had so much high expectations because I heard so many anecdotes and it had a striking name. But when I tasted it. It was bullshit bland with no character. Too smooth. As if it is a Whisky for Vodka drinkers.

Great fun to watch Ralfy! I thought the change in direction of the walking man was related to cinematographic shorthand. When a character is travelling right to left, they are returning home. Left to right, as with the newer label, they are heading out on their adventure.

It has taken me years to obtain a btl of this & I've held on to it in my collection for over a year, today I open it & taste it for the 1st time while rewatching this review. 1st impressions: clean, fresh & dry with lemon oil & pith. I'm sure I'll pick up more as the months go on, the blt oxidizes & I work out my preferred exact water amount. The brother in law, a consumer that horsese spirits inta him on a session will not be offered a taste till theres only a dribble left in the btl months from now... If at all

I know, some whisky-purists only put non-sparkling water into whisky. But I like to use a little bit of sparkling water, for me it brings more taste out of the whisky. But of course - putting anything flavoured into whisky, is a shame...

Interesting that you mention the peatyness declines with ageing! Be interesting to see how the peated Bunnahabhain matures now, Toiteach was a bit fiery when first bottled.

My missus did the best part of a 12 year Bunnahabhain in Old Fashioneds. Fully aware of what she was doing.. Honestly? They were Fantastic!

I would say the opposite Ralfy, that Malts aren't thinning down a raw spirit, but in this case adding the flavour to an over average grain distill. Coming from near Dumbarton myself, I had heard Ballantines used a lot of Islay malt in their brand, and it is evident if you water it all the way down ( a way of tasting I learnt from my ex, by accident) - they were part and parcel though of the 1970s race to the bottom of fighting brands mis-using malts in blends. ( My usual rant, I will refrain from NASty malt whisky at this point )

I have a bottle of Thompson brothers 6 year old blend and it's a fantastic pour for about £37. Glad that you gave it a mention and I'm hoping you're going to review it as part of this mini series...

I think you will find many distilleries regularly used much older barrels to achieve character and consistency, the age being the youngest, Having spoken to master blenders at a few. However, that was before NASty malts came out. Now who knows, maybe some gems with aged colours and special flavours from a single or small run of old casks are chucked into 3 yo soctch vodka. What do you think of the No Age Stated age, now that it has been about for more than a decade @ralfy?

I am enjoying a pizza from the local takeaway. It is outstanding because it isn't sweetened, I can taste all the flavours that are in it like the mushrooms and such. Rare. I've had ready meals - Lasagna and such - from supermarkets that are so bloody full of sugar, they may as well serve with custard as a pudding.

One of the best wisky's I ever consumed Mortach 17 yo from the Duncan & Taylor Dimensions series.

I think because BENROMACH 10 is a beginner whiskey it’s chill filtered so that the flavour is sweeter and more drinkable. If you have a beginner whiskey drinker taste Ardbeg 10 they probably might never drink a single malt whiskey again. If you need a great starter BENROMACH - 10 is a great whiskey to start. I don’t understand why distilleries can’t have a range that are bottled at 46 percent for the whiskey drinker who wants a fuller flavour whiskey and would pay more for it. But if you’re on a budget many cheaper whiskey’s are chill filtered and are still well made for what they are. I have bought many of these types of whiskeys and enjoyed most of them.

I managed to find one here in Hungary at a reasonable price. Cant wait for it to arrive and pour out a dram :)

I’ve had some Signatory misses though few and far between. But when they hit, they hit hard!

Black Label is a bit too strong a smokey flavor for my taste.. I perfer Red Label.. and it IS better than many many single malts.. no mater what Ralfy thinks.. all single malts are dependent on how good or bad that barrel distilate is.. so good luck with that.. at least a blend tries to balance the flavor.. many a bottle of single malt have wind up in the SINK POUR.

Comment on the old Red Label being much better - it was all part of the biggest travesty since whenever, in Scotland, that fantastic malts got used to flavour 3 y.o. in blends with other grains, including to my astonishment when I learned of it not long ago, maise ! More or less treated as an addative, an E number to bring out some character. Well over 90 percent of malt went into these blends, and they went price fighting for market share in the late 1970s. Since around 2000 we have seen this travesty again, with no age stated NASty malts. Great barrels being slung into carefully distilled ' scottish vodka' with a tell tale barley sugar note, which they have got better at disguising.
